Passenger rail expansion to Corpus Christi could be part of interstate congestion relief

CORPUS CHRISTI — Booming business and population growth along the Interstate 35 corridor has state officials seeking ways to relieve highway congestion — which could bring an Amtrak railway to Corpus Christi in the process.
The Texas Department of Transportation is studying possible improvements to the passenger railway that links Oklahoma City with San Antonio and seven cities in between. Existing freight rail lines make it possible to create a southern section to the corridor and add Corpus Christi to the system, connecting it directly with San Antonio and potential stations in Laredo and Harlingen.
