Illinois open houses could lead to even higher-speed rail

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Even while a study continues of the best route for passenger and freight traffic in Springfield, the state and federal governments are looking ahead to the possibility of more and faster passenger trains by building a second set of tracks between St. Louis and Chicago.
Five open houses in 10 days — including one at the Prairie Capital Convention Center on Thursday — are part of a $1.25 million study on another round of high-speed rail improvements.
