New high-speed rail report's simple premise: Build where people are
When looking for places to run high-speed rail, design them to link the places where people and jobs are most concentrated, says a report from America 2050, a project affiliated with the Manhattan-based Regional Plan Association.
The 56-page report, High-Speed Rail in America, does not offer many surprises. It rates corridors largely on "ridership potential," or, where the people and jobs are most highly concentrated. We know where they are.
Amtrak routes from New York to Boston, which includes New Rochelle, and from Manhattan to Albany, which includes stops at Yonkers and Croton-Harmon, also scored high on the survey's rating system.
Warren Flatau, spokesman for the Federal Railway Administration, said using a city's density can be tricky because some of them are surrounded by metropolitan areas with many people.
