INDEPENDENCE, Ohio, January 14 — In early January, members of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) ratified a new collective bargaining agreement with the New York & Atlantic Railway (NY&A), which governs rates of pay, work rules and healthcare for about 20 BLET members.
In a tremendous show of support for the union, nearly 91% of eligible voters cast ballots, with nearly two-thirds approving the new contract, which runs through December 31, 2026. The new contract provides wage increases totaling more than 15% over the life of the agreement, along with increased bonus and employer 401K match payments.
In addition, the BLET secured a sufficient raise in vacation compensation and the elimination of days required to qualify for vacation, increased personal days, a guarantee that all assignments are at a minimum of 40 hours per week, and improved the railroad’s safety boot program.
The NY&A negotiating team consisted of General Chairman Kevin Sexton, Local Chairman Robert Savino, and National Vice President Jim Louis. Vice President Louis said: “It is refreshing to deal with a railroad that has shown throughout these contract talks that their employees are an asset to them, and should be treated as such.”
BLET National President Dennis R. Pierce said, “I am proud to recognize and thank the negotiating team for a job well done. I also thank the NY&A membership for their support throughout the negotiating process and for their overwhelming participation in the ratification process.”
