Subway attacks: Terrorists have targeted rail before

WASHINGTON, D.C. It is a rail passenger's darkest nightmare: An assault on a jammed subway car at the peak of rush hour. Seven years ago, that was the scene in Moscow when two female suicide bombers struck two subway stations during the morning commute a commute in which an estimated 500,000 people were traveling by rail. At least 40 people were killed and more than 100 injured in the March 29, 2010, attacks tied to two Chechen women. On April 3, 2017, 11 people died and scores were injured when an explosion ripped through a train in the Russian city of St. Petersburg at the start of the afternoon commute.
