Train like a plan: It could be the future on the Northeast Corridor

NEWARK, N.J. — Imagine hopping on a train in New York and arriving in Boston 84 minutes later, about the same time as a plane trip.

Or getting to Washington, D.C., in 96 minutes — without ever having to leave the ground.

Among the most ambitious alternatives being considered by the Federal Railroad Administration is the building of a second "spine" along the Northeast Corridor from Washington, D.C., to Boston that would allow bullet trains traveling up to 220 mph.
