Congress spares Amtrak routes

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senate and House appropriators agreed to continue financial support for Amtrak routes receiving state subsidies after the House earlier this year voted to eliminate the money. The funding was included in an agreement announced late yesterday between members of the appropriations committees from both chambers of Congress and both political parties. The House proposal would have eliminated 26 train routes in 15 states affecting 9 million passengers.
