MERCED, Calif. — The city of Merced will apply for an $800,000 grant from the California High-Speed Rail Authority for land use, traffic studies and financial planning around its proposed high-speed rail line.

The railway is intended to carry passengers between San Francisco and Los Angeles by way of the San Joaquin Valley at speeds of up to 220 mph. The rail line, if it's built, eventually could span 800 miles.
