Meetings set on high-speed Las Vegas-California train

(The Associated Press circulated the following on April 28, 2009.)

LAS VEGAS — Developers of a plan for a high-speed train linking Las Vegas and Victorville, Calif., along Interstate 15 want to hear from residents about the privately funded proposal.

DesertXpress Enterprises LLC says the federal government accepted a draft environmental impact statement last month.

Now the company's hosting public hearings Tuesday in Las Vegas, Wednesday in Barstow, Calif., and Thursday in Victorville.

Company officials say construction could begin early next year and take four years.

Proponents say that at speeds of up to 150 mph, the 180-mile trip between Las Vegas and Victorville would take less than 90 minutes. They say the train could carry millions of passengers a year by 2015.
