UTU members vote for merger with BLE
CLEVELAND, October 30, 2001 -- In a vote certified on October 29, members of the United Transportation Union voted to approve a merger with the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers by an almost six-to-one margin.
The UTU vote was 23,368 in favor of the merger and 4,146 opposed. The tally was certified by the American Arbitration Association (AAA). The referendum had been finalized on September 17, but the counting of the ballots was delayed by a lawsuit brought by three BLE officers.
The lawsuit challenged the manner in which the balloting of BLE members was handled and was dismissed as a result of a settlement by the attorneys representing the three officers and the BLE International Division. As a part of the settlement, the original ballots will be destroyed and the BLE will hold a second referendum on the merger.
The new ballots will be mailed to BLE members on November 7, and they
must be filled out and returned to the AAA no later than December 10. The
BLE will utilize the services of AAA to handle all phases of the new referendum,
including the printing, mailing and counting of the new ballots.
