Rail labor, carriers agree to end 'cramdown'

CLEVELAND, March 21 -- Late this afternoon, a group of rail labor unions and carriers reached agreement on language to end the practice known as "cramdown."

A complete list of unions and carriers was unavailable at press time, however, the unions included BLE, BMWE, BRS, TCU, TWU, and the Sheetmetal workers, while the carrier group included BNSF, CSX, KCS, NS and UP.

Detailed provisions and/or a copy of the agreement will be available on the BLE website tomorrow.

"Cramdown" is a Surface Transportation Board-approved practice of overriding collective bargaining agreements in approving railroad mergers.
