BLET supports organizing drive by Train Dispatchers union

CLEVELAND, December 18 -- The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen is asking its members to help support an organizing drive by the American Train Dispatchers Association (ATDA) at the Union Pacific Railroad.

An anomaly among Class I railroads in the United States, the train dispatchers working for Union Pacific currently do not have union representation. Led by its President, F. Leo McCann, the ATDA has secured enough authorization cards ("A-cards") for the National Mediation Board to hold a representation election for the craft or class of train dispatcher. Balloting will begin on December 20, 2013, and will run through January 15, 2014.

In a message to UP''''s train dispatchers, BLET National President Dennis R. Pierce wrote: "If you choose to be represented by ATDA you will be choosing a union with a long and distinguished track record of providing representation by highly skilled, experienced and knowledgeable leaders. I urge you to vote for representation by ATDA for the betterment of your life, your career and the lives of your families. Union representation will not guarantee you everything you want; however, it will provide you with a greater say in those issues that will affect you and your family, now and in the future."

The BLET is advising its Union Pacific members of the importance of this vote and asking for their help in spreading a message of solidarity and support for the ATDA organizing drive.

"There are nearly 600 train dispatchers eligible to vote in the upcoming election," President Pierce said. "Your words of encouragement or support for the union can go a long way toward turning the tide of the election in favor our Brothers and Sisters in the ATDA. On behalf of the BLET National Division, I wish best of luck to President McCann and the ATDA during the election, and I encourage all train dispatchers to vote YES for the ATDA."
