Teamsters host training workshop on Railway Labor Act

CLEVELAND, March 6 — The Teamsters Leadership Academy is hosting a three-day program to educate members regarding the Railway Labor Act. Scheduled for May 29-31, 2013, the workshop will take place at Teamsters headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The program will give an overview of the Railway Labor Act (RLA), with course topics covering: the history of the RLA; negotiation procedures and grievance handling in accordance with the Act; and functions of the National Mediation Board (NMB). It will also provide participants with a comparative analysis of the differences between the National Labor Relations Act and the Railway Labor Act.

The RLA governs the railroad and airline industries, and the workshop is primarily geared toward members of the Teamsters Rail Conference and the Teamsters Airline Division. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen Education and Training Department has partnered with the Teamsters Leadership Academy to help develop the workshop from a rail industry perspective. National Secretary-Treasurer William C. Walpert, Vice President Marcus J. Ruef, Special Representative and Coordinator of Education & Training Ken Kroeger, and Assistant Arbitration Director Doug Davidson have all been involved in the project. Brother Davidson will serve as an instructor for part of the seminar.

The Teamsters Leadership Academy (TLA) is a leadership program that was established in 1986 to provide Local Union leaders with the information and skills they need to address an ever-changing workplace and labor relations environment. The Teamsters Leadership Academy is held both in Washington, D.C. and by region.

There is a $165 fee per person for this program. Before making travel arrangements, members should contact Marie Nolan of the Teamsters Training and Development Department to confirm space availability: (202) 624-8965. A registration form and a list of available hotels is available here.
