Cold weather still causing problems on Metro North train lines

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. --You can expect delays on the Metro-North tracks again this morning. Cold weather problems and repairs could make for a longer ride into work.
Things have gone from bad to worse. Six more trains have been canceled. Three are on the New Haven line, two on the Harlem line, and one on the Hudson line. The cancelations are due to mechanical problems caused by this cold weather. In fact, the 7:09 a.m. train out of New Rochelle has been cancelled. That means that you will have to double-up on other trains that are bound to be crowded.
Metro North commuters are noticing that the ride home these days is uncomfortable, more crowded and longer.
Commuter: "Its been a little slow."
Commuter: "Coming home, there are like three trains cancelled."
That's because there are fewer trains on the tracks and more in the repair yard broken down. Metro North says the freezing temperatures, snow and ice are ruining train motors and door latches.
Out of 800 cars in the fleet, 242 of them are broken and out of service. Most of it weather related. As crews work around the clock to repair the trains, Metro North is re-scheduling and asking commuters to bear with them.
Dan Brucker, Metro North: "Very often we will have to combine trains. Which means a local and an express train that usually leave within a few minutes of each other in the same direction, well now, we combine it into a larger local train."
Commuter: "They say they are broken. There is nothing they can do. But at $300 dollars a month, that is a alot to bare with."
Now, the inside of the brake neck tunnel is on the Hudson Line near Cold Springs. The inside is actually heated to prevent water and snow from causing ice on the tracks. But Metro North is not the only place dealing with these problems; there are problems on the Long Island Railroad as well.
This morning, in Queens, outside of the Hunter's Point station, a LIRR was making its way in from Queens towards Manhattan. But officials at the LIRR say they may experience the same type of problems that they are having on Metro North this morning. That would be "weather-related equipment problems." Its vague, but the LIRR is expecting delays and cancellations this morning on any LIRR line.
As you head out this morning, allow some extra time and do have some extra patience because a lot of these tracks are frozen with ice and snow.
