Railroad cars derail, spilling liquid product

CUMBERLAND — Approximately 400 gallons of a liquid fuel product spilled when three railroad cars derailed early Friday near the CSX car shop near Offutt Street, reports the Cumberland Times-News.

There were no injuries and no fire when the incident occurred shortly before 4 a.m.

The spilled fuel was identified as petroleum Naphtha, which leaked from a tank car containing 25,000 gallons of the highly-flammable fuel.

The spill was contained by diking the material and stopping the leak at the tank valve where the leak occurred, according to Cumberland Fire Chief William Herbaugh.

Cumberland Fire Department and the Allegany County Hazardous Incident Response Team controlled the leak following alert at 3:55 a.m.

“They were moving some cars when the tank car derailed, rolled onto its side and broke a 1-inch valve and a 2-inch valve off piping of the tank itself,” said Herbaugh.

HIRT and city fire crews stood by at the scene late Friday morning as a cleaning contractor was being awaited to remove the spilled fuel.
