Amtrak to construct 'tunnel box' for Hudson River rail project to cross Manhattan development

SOMERVILLE, N.J. — Amtrak officials are looking to double rail capacity across the Hudson River, but sending trains through two proposed tunnels from Newark to New York City would mean crossing an area slated for a mixed-use development on Manhattan’s west side.

That’s where the so-called “tunnel box” comes in.

To preserve available track space for the Gateway tunnel project, the transit agency is planning to construct an 800-foot-long concrete box in the area where the Hudson Yards development is to be built.
