AAR: Intermodal volume up 13.5 percent over 2012 for week ending January 19

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported mixed weekly rail traffic for the week ending January 19, 2013, with U.S. railroads originating 277,490 carloads, down 3.5 percent compared with the same week last year. Intermodal volume for the week totaled 249,397 trailers and containers, up 13.5 percent compared with the same week last year.
Nine of the 20 carload commodity groups posted increases compared with the same week in 2012, with petroleum products, up 60.9 percent; motor vehicles and equipment, up 19.1 percent, and lumber and wood products, up 15.8 percent. The groups showing a decrease in weekly traffic included primary forest products, down 20.9 percent; iron and steel scrap, down 17.7 percent, and nonmetallic minerals, down 16.9 percent.
Weekly carload volume on Eastern railroads was down 3 percent compared with the same week last year. In the West, weekly carload volume was down 3.9 percent compared with the same week in 2012.
For the first three weeks of 2013, U.S. railroads reported cumulative volume of 799,065 carloads, down 7.3 percent from the same point last year, and 680,610 trailers and containers, up 5.9 percent from last year.
Canadian railroads reported 77,172 carloads for the week, up 13.1 percent compared with the same week last year, and 53,581 trailers and containers, up 11.5 percent compared with 2012. For the first three weeks of 2013, Canadian railroads reported cumulative volume of 221,575 carloads, up 3.8 percent from the same point last year, and 149,490 trailers and containers, up 8.1 percent from last year.
Mexican railroads reported 14,658 carloads for the week, up 7.4 percent compared with the same week last year, and 9,543 trailers and containers, up 2.9 percent. Cumulative volume on Mexican railroads for the first three weeks of 2013 is 37,598 carloads, up 2.1 percent compared with the same point last year, and 23,988 trailers and containers, down 5.9 percent from last year.
Combined North American rail volume for the first three weeks of 2013 on 13 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads totaled 1,058,238 carloads, down 4.8 percent compared with the same point last year, and 854,088 trailers and containers, up 5.9 percent compared with last year.
