Ahead of Democratic convention, a frustration with ‘us versus them’ politics

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The peppy little actor who played Officer Bagatelle on Laverne & Shirley — not to mention roles on Adam-12, ALF, Simon & Simon, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, 13 East and Doogie Howser, M.D. — is getting ready to march for reasonableness and sanity in the Charlotte, N.C., Labor Day Parade.

It’s 8 a.m. on the eve of the Democratic National Convention that will re-certify, if not re-beatify, Barack Obama for the American presidency. A few hundred members of the United Auto Workers, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the National Association of Letter Carriers, the United Food and Commercial Workers, and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen are massing in a downtown park. So is Officer Bagatelle, who has traded his phoney badge and billy club for a polo shirt with the logo of the Screen Actors Guild.
