Watco launches Idaho railroad, Adrian & Blissfield plans HQ relocation

(The following appeared on the Progressive Railroading website on November 25, 2009.)

On Monday, the Watco Cos. Inc. launched its newest short line, the Boise Valley Railroad (BVRR).

The railroad operates a 25-mile “Boise Cut-Off” line from Nampa to Boise, Idaho, and an 11-mile “Wilder Branch” from Wilder to Caldwell, Idaho. BVRR also retains trackage rights from Union Pacific Railroad for a line between Nampa and Caldwell.

The short line will serve 84 shippers, several of which are customers of Watco’s Eastern Idaho, Great Northwest and Yellowstone Valley railroads. Watco owns and operates 22 short lines.

Meanwhile, Adrian & Blissfield Rail Road Co. plans to relocate its headquarters from Westland to Blissfield, Mich., next year. The company currently leases space in Westland and contracted Kime Design Inc. to design Blissfield facility renovations, which are scheduled to begin in the first quarter.

The 12,000-square-foot facility will house various departments including executive, administration, accounting, security, customer service, technology, dinner train reservations, operations, maintenance of way, engineering, and communications and signals.

Adrian & Blissfield Rail Road owns and operates four railroads in southeastern Michigan: the Adrian & Blissfield Railroad, a short line in Lenawee County that also operates The Old Road Dinner Train in Blissfield; Charlotte Southern Railroad Co., a short line in Eaton County that also operates The Old Road Dinner Train in Charlotte; Detroit Connecting Railroad Co., a short line in eastern Wayne County; and Lapeer Industrial Railroad Co., a short line in Lapeer County.
