Ridership on Ill. Amtrak routes rises

(The Associated Press circulated the following on November 24, 2009.)

CHICAGO — Amtrak says 1.8 million passengers rode its state-supported trains in Illinois in fiscal year 2009, a slight increase from 2008.

The Illinois Department of Transportation supports several Amtrak routes. The most popular are the routes from Chicago to St. Louis and from Chicago to Milwaukee.

Amtrak officials say while ridership on the transportation department routes rose a modest 1 percent from 2008, it's up 20 percent from fiscal year 2007.

Ridership on the trains from Chicago to St. Louis is up 6 percent from 2008 and 21 percent from 2007.

The Department of Transportation is applying for federal stimulus money to help reduce the travel times between the two cities by 90 minutes and to increase the number of daily round trips from five to nine.
