Police arrest Oklahoma City man after fake bombs found at railroad

(The following story by Michael Kimball appeared at NewsOK.com on October 13, 2009.)

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Police arrested Chadwick Everett Baker, 33, in connection with a bomb hoax Sunday evening near railroad tracks in south Oklahoma City, a spokesman said.

Local, federal and railroad authorities spent several hours along the tracks at SE 34 and Shields Boulevard after a witness said a man driving near the tracks threw what appeared to be pipe bombs out his window about 5 p.m., police Master Sgt. Gary Knight said Monday. Bomb squad technicians said the items were fake, but were built to resemble pipe bombs.

Officers found Baker near the scene Sunday night, interviewed him and booked him into the Oklahoma County jail on three complaints of manufacturing a hoax improvised explosive device, Knight said. Baker remained in jail Monday, but bail had not been set, a jail spokeswoman said.

Police wouldn’t say what led officers to Baker or what a possible motive might have been. He is scheduled to be released from parole at the end of this month after previously serving about two-thirds of a 33-month prison sentence for a 2006 methamphetamine possession conviction in Oklahoma County, online prison records show.

Several trains were delayed Sunday.
