South Dakota selling land along state rail line

(The following Associated Press report appeared on the Rapid City Journal website on November 7.)

YANKTON, S.D. -- The state is readying dozens of parcels of land for sale as a byproduct of the sale of the state’s core rail line to Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railway.

The BNSF will pay about $41 million for the 368 miles of state-owned track.

Laura Schoen-Carbonneau, in the state Transportation Department, said the state also will sell about 130 parcels of land along the rail line. Most of it is being leased out and is no longer needed for the railroad.

If a parcel doesn’t sell, it will revert to the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe.
